ROTC/Leadership
_Any
students who have already taken or are currently enrolled in ROTC/Leadership will fulfill their one-year of
Wellness through that course, and students who have entered University High
School as a sophomore, junior, or senior and have completed a year of Wellness
at another high school are excused from this option as they have met the one-year
requirement for Wellness.
Wellness Credit
_
All
students in the Tolleson Union High School District are required to complete
one year of Wellness to graduate from high school. At University High School, our goal is not
only to help students fulfill these graduation requirements, but also to
prepare them to be successful in a four-year university upon graduation. So while students at University High School
may enroll in two full semesters of a traditional Wellness course to fulfill
this requirement, they also have the opportunity to complete the course through
an online Health course and physical activity hours accumulated outside of
school. In this way, students are able
to use their school day to take classes that will better prepare them for the
academic rigors of college while still allowing them to meet requirements for
high school graduation.
Through this combination of an online course in Health and an accumulation of physical activity hours, student earn two semesters of Wellness credit equal to one year of a traditional Wellness class. The online Health course is completed on a program called NovaNET, where students are asked to answer questions regarding physical and mental health in a multiple-choice format. Students are encouraged to take notes to help pass lessons on the first attempt. Once students have completed the course with a passing grade of a C or higher, they earn one semester of Wellness credit.
Students received an in-class tutorial on Monday, September 26th, 2011, which described the expectations above and walked them through how to log into and operate their NovaNET account. As students work on completing their Health course through NovaNET, periodic review will be required by their counselor to ensure students are passing the class. Counselors will check student accounts once per day to assess students who require review in order to move them forward in the course.
As counselors will be checking once per day, students will be expected to complete a minimum of two lessons per month to allow ample time to complete the course by March 21st, 2012. There are fourteen lessons total and students may take the final review test no later than March 28th, 2012. Students may complete the review test prior to this date, though any students who have not completed the final exam by March 28th, 2012 will be required to stay after school to finish.
Students may complete their online Health class on any computer with an Internet connection and the requirements needed to operate the website. Students may also use computers in the Tolleson Union High School Library before school from 8:00-8:20 a.m. and after school from 3:00-3:45 p.m. Please check with teachers for University High School computer lab hours.
